Cancer can come in many forms and one that you should be aware of is throat and tongue cancer. Throat and tongue cancer affects the mouth, voice box, vocal cords, and other parts of the throat. It’s a fairly uncommon form of cancer but should be something that you are aware of. There are symptoms of each cancer to be vigilant about and if you notice any of these symptoms, you should be sure to contact your ENT doctor as soon as possible for a diagnosis and to start treatment.
What are Throat and Tongue Cancer?
There are different types of each cancer. There’s cancer of the oral tongue, cancer of the base of the tongue, pharyngeal cancer, and laryngeal cancer. Each one affects a different area of the throat or tongue and can be treated in different ways.
Some common symptoms of throat cancer to be aware of include:
- A change in your voice
- Issues swallowing
- Sudden weight loss
- Consistent sore throat
- Persistent cough, occasionally with blood
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Wheezing
- Ear Pain
- A constant need to clear the throat
Some common symptoms of tongue cancer include:
- A lump on the side of the tongue
- The lump is gray/pink to red
- The lump can bleed very easily when touched or bitten
- Pain
- Sense of fullness in the throat
- Issues swallowing
- Ear pain
- Voice changes
Both types of cancer share certain symptoms and if you experience any of these symptoms that don’t go away after a week or so, you should be sure to visit your ENT doctor immediately to check if you’re struggling with either throat or tongue cancer. The sooner you visit your doctor with symptoms, the sooner treatments can start.
